English Premier League clubs Southampton and Crystal Palace will battle it out in the third round of the FA Cup when they meet at St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton this Saturday, January 9. Both teams have been struggling in the league lately, but Palace has been in fine form away from home. Unfortunately, they played at Selhurst Park last weekend in league action and were downed by neighboring Chelsea in a London derby. Southampton didn’t fare any better as they were downed 1-0 on the road by newly-promoted Norwich City.

Southampton vs Crystal Palace – Head to Head:
- Crystal Palace beat Southampton 1-0 at home in league action back on December 12. It was their second win in their past three meetings, but they’ve won just two out of the past eight. There has been a winner in the last 11 encounters with their last draw being 1-1 at Crystal Palace in February of 2008 in a second-tier Championship League clash. Overall, the two sides have met 99 times in all competitions with Southampton winning 41, losing 36 and drawing the other 22. The teams met in the 1955 FA Cup and played to a 0-0 draw in London with Southampton winning the replay 2-0 at home. They met in the cup two years later with Palace winning 1-0 at home and then beating Southampton 2-1 away in the 1965 competition. They met again in the FA Cup in 1973 and 1976 with Palace winning 2-0 and losing 2-0 at home respectively. Their last FA Cup encounter came just last year with Palace winning 3-2 down on the south coast.
Southampton hasn’t won in their past eight league matches since dropping league-leading Arsenal 4-0. Since then they’ve suffered seven defeats and have one draw for one out of a possible 24 points. However, they’re still the betting favorites heading into this match even though Palace beat them 1-0 in a Premier League tilt last month. The Saints enter the match in 13th place in the league standings with 24 points from six wins, six draws and eight losses. The south coast club has scored 26 goals and allowed 24 against.
