Pittsburgh Steelers – A Closer Look:
The Steelers scored 24.9 points on average per game this season and allowed 20.4 against. Their road record was 5-3. Pittsburgh’s on a hot streak with eight consecutive wins under their belt and four in a row away from home. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has been pretty inconsistent lately though and has been picked off eight times in his past seven outings, including twice against Miami on Sunday. Receiver Antonio Brown and running back Le’Veon Bell have been helping him out though. Bell set a club record for rushing in a playoff contest when he carried the ball 29 times for 167 yards against the Dolphins and added a pair of touchdowns. Brown also had a fine outing with two touchdowns and 124 yards on his five catches.
Roethlisberger wasn’t too busy as he passed for 189 yards by going 13 for 18 with two touchdown passes to balance out his interceptions. However, Big Ben hurt his foot just before the game ended, but insisted he’ll be starting in Kansas city. The Pittsburgh pass defense was 11th-best in the league this season at 242.6 yards against per game and the run defense was ranked 12 as it allowed 100 yards per week. The Steelers’ recorded four sacks against the Dolphins and forced a trio of turnovers in the opening half. Pittsburgh held Dolphins’ running back Jay Ajayi in check as he ran for only 33 yard on his 16 rushes last week. When the teams met in week 4, he burned them for more 200 yards.
Kansas City Chiefs – A Closer Look:
Kansas City scored an average of 24.3 points a game this season while giving up 19.4 points against. Their home record was an impressive 6-2. They earned their bye last week by losing just one of their last six games to capture their division. Quarterback Alex Smith enjoyed a fine season along with tight-end Travis Kelce and rookie wide receiver Tyreek Hill. Kelce led all tight-ends in receiving yards this season with 1,125. The defense recorded 33 takeaways to lead the NFL, but allowed 368.5 yards against per week to rank 24th. Their takeaway to turnover ratio was plus 16 on the year.
The Chiefs have lost four straight postseason games on their home turf with their last win in KC coming back in 1993. Kansas City managed to beat Denver and Oakland both twice during the regular season and will be tough to take down. The Chiefs’ two home defeats were both by 19-17 scores this season. They’ll be facing a quarterback in Roethlisberger who has had a hard time on the road as he’s thrown just eight touchdowns away from home along with eight interceptions and a quarterback rating of 78.4. However, at home against the Chiefs earlier this season, Big Ben threw five touchdown passes while Bell ran for 140 yards.
